Historical events play an imperative in providing knowledge about a country's history. In this cue card, I would like to talk about a historical event that I know very well.
- When did it happen?
This event is known as the Partition of India in 1947. In this event, the British Regime in the Indian subcontinent divided India into parts named India and Pakistan. The partition was outlined in the Indian Independence Act of 1947. The change of political borders notably included the division of two provinces of British India named Bengal and Punjab.
- What happened?
The partition was the result of religious tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities, fueled by the demand for a separate state for Muslims. The violent displacement of millions of people created a legacy of trauma and insecurity that continues to affect Indian society to this day. Moreover, the act created two new independent dominions; India and Pakistan. Pakistan was split into Pakistan and East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh. The Bengal and Punjab provinces were partitioned between the two new countries.
- Who were the most important people involved?
Lord Louis Mountbatten assumed the role of the last viceroy on 24 March 1947. He announced the Partition Plan on 3 June 1947, declaring that the British had decided to transfer power to the Indian and Pakistani governments by mid-August 1947. Moreover, while many solely blame Jinnah, the British, the Congress and the Hindu Mahasabha were equally, if not more, complicit. Seventy-one years back, on June 3, 1947, in a joint conference with the Congress and the Muslim League, the last Viceroy of India, Louis Mountbatten, announced the partition of India. Therefore, it is also known as the June 3 plan.
