The environmental issue has become a grave concern since humans pollute it regularly. Thus, a section of society believes that the finest way to protect our ecosystem is to use local resources than transportation from other areas. I partially agree with the notion since it will curb pollution levels. However, it may also impose pressure on a particular area.
On the one hand, plenty of benefits sustain the given viewpoint. The primary usefulness of using local foods and building materials is that people will stave away diseases like Asthma and Cancer. To be more precise, transportation contributes to air pollution which affects public health. When we reduce transportation and lower energy use, emissions that cause climate change are lowered too.
Building materials sourced locally mean shorter trips to haul, lower diesel fuel consumption and less greenhouse gas emissions. The secondary miracle is that this concept will deliver job opportunities to locals, and there will be no need for commuting long distances to get jobs.
On the other hand, this concept invites several troubles too. People usually consume a number of local dairy products that may be unsafe since they do not meet food safety standards. Therefore, they use packed items that are not produced locally. Recently, the Indian government has given red flags to various local food products belonging to particular cities since they consist of the most common adulterants like detergent, caustic soda and refined oil. Therefore, in these cases, it would be beneficial to import a few food items to save people's health than the environment.
In the same way, sometimes local building materials are detrimental to biodiversity owing to excessive mining at a particular place. In these cases, transportation pollution is lesser than environmental issues due to intensive mining because it disrupts wildlife and fishery habitats, the water balance, local climates and sedimentation.
To conclude, after discussing both schools of thought, I believe that local products are imperative to safeguard the planet; nevertheless, we must believe in import as well in case of any trouble with local.
