Some people are of the opinion that office law is the main reason for many social and personal problems and that is why it should be reduced to 35 hours per week. What are the advantages and disadvantages of reducing the working week to 35 hours?
This essay is submitted by our student Dr Gaurav Tandon. It covers almost every area.
A few people assert that long working hours are causing plenty of social and personal issues in people's life and claim to decrease, the government must introduce 35 hours scenario per week instead of 40. Hence, this essay will discuss the positive and negative outcomes of this notion.
To begin with, authorities have fixed 40 hours per week as legal working hours in different sectors and departments. Owing to this, people have been working 8 hours a day for 5 days a week and are given weekends off. However, by reducing office hours an extra hour at their disposal can be diverted to a few household jobs or spending extra time with their family and offspring. By spending a little extra time with their loved ones, employees can strengthen their bond with them and can have a greater work-life balance as well. Moreover, this can also provide a sense of satisfaction and pleasure amongst the breadwinners which will inculcate positive energy in them. Thus, they will report to their workplaces with more enthusiasm and perform their jobs more efficiently.
On the contrary, slashing office hours can result in lower output for a company or an organization owing to reduced work time. It means employees will work for a lesser time for employers due to which the time required to accomplish a project will incline. Lower output impacts the economic growth and development of an organization which can lead to the overall plundering GDP of a nation. Besides this, the creativity of a number of workers will also nose-dive since they will show less interest in their jobs.
To conclude, after discussing both schools of thought, I consider that declining office hours have both merits and demerits. However, the positivity outweighs the negativity.
